Hounds of the HeartlandHounds of the Heartland (GPA/Central Oklahoma) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is a non-profit humane organization dedicated to finding loving, responsible homes for both retired racing greyhounds that can no longer compete and for young greyhounds not placed on the racetrack.  Our aim is to let the public know what excellent, loving pets these noble dogs make.

Greyhounds are known for their very gentle, quiet and friendly dispositions. Since they are retired racing dogs, there is a common misconception that they would be high strung and extremely active but it is actually very much the opposite. At our events they typically lie down or sleep the entire time! Greyhounds typically do not bark or shed and they are wonderful with children.

We rely on our foster homes to teach our greyhounds how to live in a home. Until they come to our group, most of the greyhounds have never been inside a home before so ordinary things like stairs & tile floors are completely new to them. Foster homes are the key to our organization as we can only bring in as many dogs as we have foster homes to place them in until they are adopted.

Oklahoma is the 3rd largest breeding state for greyhounds so we always have a constant supply of greyhounds ready to be placed in homes. We are affiliated with Greyhound Pets of America which is a national organization committed to finding homes for retired racing greyhounds. That means you can find a chapter near you. Fostering is free, as the organization provides everything you need to foster a greyhound. It is very rewarding too! Fostering is a great option for those who are considering adoption but would like a chance to “meet the breed” beforehand.

Our organization holds monthly “Show & Tell” events at local venues such as Petsmart & shopping malls in order to allow people to meet our retired racers and get a feel for what great pets they make. We encourage our members & volunteers to bring their greyhounds to these events in order to introduce the public to their wonderful personalities. With the help of Name Tag, Inc. we will be better able to identify our volunteers in order to make them more approachable by anyone interested in learning about greyhound adoption.

Please visit our website to read about our organization and see our adoptable dogs; and our blog to see pictures of us and our fun events!
